Forms of Saeculum in ms. Turin, BNU, L.III.14

On the occasion of the XIII IMMLleida Congress (International Medieval Meeting Lleida, June 2–6, 2025), within the thematic session “Collective identities and group solidarities in the late Middle Ages,” Andrea Macciò presented a paper aimed at exploring the different ways medieval collectivity is represented in the miscellany manuscript Turin, Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria, L. III. 14, intended for the education of the chivalric aristocracy. Many texts in the anthology, such as Jean de Vignay’s Jeu des échecs moralisé and the Regale du monde, indeed demonstrate, through a contrastive analysis, the need to reorganize the social frameworks by reflecting on the characteristics of the productive and dominant classes and the dynamics of their reciprocal relationships in 14th-century France.
